Relaxin'

There is not much of anything better than sitting on the deck, enjoying our beautiful yard.
I am thankful when I look at all of the trees, bushes and grass.
My family and I worked so hard to plant and cultivate all of it.

(that's Joy relaxing in the hammock. It almost looks like she has been captured!)

Cruises

Aren't cruises nice!!??
I think every couple should be REQUIRED to take at least one per year.
All in favor say "AYE"

LOVE THOSE GERMANS.2

On June 13, I posted about a wonderful shirt I had seen on a man at "R" Place Restaurant in Morris. It said, "Living with a German Builds Character."

The story I heard about today confirms the strength and resolve of those Germans.
The different aspects of this story amaze me.

Pencil removed from woman's head

59-year-old suffered from headaches, nosebleeds for 55 years

BERLIN - A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported on Monday.

Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was four.

“The pencil went right through my skin — and disappeared into my head,” Wegner told the newspaper.

It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.

At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.

The majority of the pencil, some 3.1 inches long, was taken out in an operation at a private Berlin clinic, but the tip had grown in so firmly that it was impossible to remove.

Don’t Mess with Miss America – even if she is 82!

I loved this story I read today. I would love to meet her. I guess you could also call her a “lion chaser.” She reminds me of my Granny Thornton!

WAYNESBURG, Ky. -

Miss America 1944 has a talent that likely has never appeared on a beauty pageant stage: She fired a handgun to shoot out a vehicle's tires and stop an intruder. Venus Ramey, 82, confronted a man on her farm in south-central Kentucky last week after she saw her dog run into a storage building where thieves had previously made off with old farm equipment.

Ramey said the man told her he would leave. "I said, 'Oh, no you won't,' and I shot their tires so they couldn't leave," Ramey said.

She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-caliber handgun.

"I didn't even think twice. I just went and did it," she said. "If they'd even dared come close to me, they'd be 6 feet under by now."

Ramey then flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911.

Curtis Parrish of Ohio was charged with misdemeanor trespassing, Deputy Dan Gilliam said. The man's hometown wasn't immediately available. Three other people were questioned but were not arrested.

After winning the pageant with her singing, dancing and comedic talents, Ramey sold war bonds and her picture was adorned on a B-17 that made missions over Germany in World War II, according to the Miss America Web site.

Ramey lived in Cincinnati for several years and was instrumental in helping rejuvenate Over-the-Rhine historic buildings. She returned to Kentucky in 1990 to live on her farm.

"I'm trying to live a quiet, peaceful life and stay out of trouble, and all it is, is one thing after another," she said.

I've been through the wringer

I was talking with a friend (technically emailing) and they shared that they have been through the wringer.

How many people even know what the phrase means, “been through the wringer”?

I told my friend, “I'm sorry that you've been "through the wringer." Do you realize that there are several generations that have no idea what that phrase means?!”

Now, I know what the phrase means. Because my mother had an old Maytag washer with the wringer that she used up until about 1970. (no, that's not my mom in the picture)

It was like all the appliances back from that day. They kept going and going and going......
Our refrigerator kept going forever. The handle fell off first - too many
pulls by your truly!

It seems we've made a complete about-face with product quality. When I was growing up, automobiles rarely lasted more than three or four years without needing major repairs, but appliances would run for 25 or 30 years and never miss a lick. Today, cars can go 150,000 miles, but we're lucky if our appliances last a year.

On the plus side, at least our cars will be around to take us to the Laundromat.

Oh yes, my mom hung the clothes outside on a clothes line. I just thought, what did mom do during the winter or when it was raining outside? I’ll have to call her and ask.

Coffee

There's nothing better than to have coffee with people you care about.
And there is nothing worse than to waste coffee time with people that....
well, you figure it out.
Life is TOO short. Stay awake for it.
